For non-service-related deaths, the VA will pay up to $762 toward burial and funeral expenses if the person was hospitalized or $300 if the person was not hospitalized. Medicaid does not pay for burials, but will allow a recipient of Medicaid to set aside "burial funds" that are clearly designated for the client's or spouse's burial-related expenses. Property set aside for this purpose cannot be co-mingled and the property can only include certain contracts or funds.
